When I was sixteen and started driving on my own, I remember my mom constantly reminding me to always be aware of my surroundings, carry my key in my hand on my way out to the car (this was before key fobs) and to lock my doors right away when I get in my car. Never sit in it unlocked. If I had my key in my hand, she taught me that I could use it as a sort of weapon, like a knife. I fortunately never had to use my keys to protect me. Locking my doors right when I get in my car, probably saved my life.
